These structures have traditionally been manufactured from wood. Depending on the type of wood used, there can be a great deal of maintenence required to keep the structure looking it's best. First and foremost, the wood must be properly sealed or painted before installing the structure. When creating the structure, hardware that can tolerate the elements is a must. A large rust stain running down the side of a lovely white painted lattice does not look very good. Next after a few years, the structure will require painting again. This is not a fun process. First you must take any vines or roses off of the structure. Once they're trained, they may not want to come off so easily. Next, depending on the type of paint you originally used, you may need to scrape any loose paint away. After that, you should probably re-prime or re-seal. And finally you get to paint. Only after the paint is dry can you place the plants back onto the newly painted structure. Imagine, if there was only a better way! Now there is!!

Trellis Tips:

Always consider the lighting your plant will have when placing a trellis or arbor. Different vines and flowers have different light requirements.
Make sure your trellis is sufficiently secured to the ground and surrounding structures to support both it's weight and the weight of the plant. Our aluminum trellises go a long way to solve this problem with their interlocking anchor stakes. Simply interlock the two stakes with sides of trellis base and then drive stakes into the ground.
Roses are always a favorite vine for trellises, but other varieties can be used as well. among these are Hyacinth bean,Clematis, wintercreeper euonymus, Sweet Peas, wisteria,Blackberries, Honeysuckle,,chocolate vine,grape vines,English Ivy, passion flowers,& Virginia creeper
Attract hummingbirds with a wall of flowers made from ladder trellises. Some great vines to attract hummers are the Actinidia kolomikta, Flame creeper a.k.a.Scottish Flame Flower (Nasturtium (Tropaeolum T. majus), Morning Glory (Ipomoea nil 'Variegata' ) & English Ivy ‘Goldheart’ . Plant different species on each side of your flower wall. It's also a good idea to place two walls adjacent to each other at different angles. This way they can help support each other. A final note; please DO NOT USE INSECTICIDES when trying to attract hummingbirds. They can be harmful to the little guys. Please use only ORGANIC substances.
Indoors can be a great place for trellises also! You can create dramatic effects with these living walls. Some great candidates are Pothos, Philodendendron, Mandevilla and Ivies. Secure a flat trellis to the floor with "L" brackets and bolt the end of the trellis to an adjacent wall. You can also use a large cedar planter as a base for your indoor trellis. Make sure that the location of bolted trellises will support their weight as well as the weight of the plant as they can get quite heavy.
